The pricing for Insomniac’s Resistance 3 “Doomsday Edition” bundle for the Sony PlaySation Move was too much for me to resist (bad pun intended).  For $149.99 you get:

  • PlayStation 3 Eye Camera
  • Move Wand Controller
  • Move Nav Controller
  • Move Sharpshooter Gun
  • Copy of the Resistance 3 Game

Right now, if you buy all of these items separately, it would retail for about $240. With current prices at Amazon  it would cost about $212.

Of if you do like me and buy the bundle, you save from $63-$90. Essentially Sony is giving you the Resistance 3 game when you buy the Doomsday Edition bundle.

Installation (nightmare):

What a pain in the ass installing a game on the PlayStation is nowadays.  After inserting the disc, it’s now become almost standard that there’s a title update which takes awhile to download and what seems like an eternity to install.  Ok, the game is installed, let’s get things started…or so I thought.  I got to a screen where it was installing trophies and it froze.  Apparently I was not alone, some suggestions finally led me to delete the game data, which was corrupted mind you, after going through the motions and although it looks like it’s not completed deleting restart the PS3.  Restart Resistance WITHOUT accepting the title update.  Then restart again accepting the title update. Did anyone test this, holy shit what a pain in the ass.  Microsoft definitely got Xbox Live title updates right, the PlayStation 3 was out almost a year later with an inferior service, you’d think they would have at least tried to copy something that works!

The actual game:

If I haven’t scared you off yet, here’s where I’m digging this game.  I’m playing on a 55″ Samsung 3D TV, with 7.1 Surround, and the PlayStation Move sharpsho0ter.  This is definitely an immersive experience.

Shooting with the Move is not like your traditional FPS where the targeting recticle is always centered on the screen.  The player controls the cursor with the Move and when it reaches the edges of the screen your character’s vision then moves left/right/up/down.  You still control your character’s movement forward/back/left/right with the thumbstick on the nav controller.  There’s definitely a learning curve to this and I’d recommend setting the difficulty on the most casual level when getting started.  I found it to be nearly impossible to use if you get surrounded by enemies in close quarters. I’ve made it to the 3rd major area of the single player (Mt. Pleasant, PA, chapter 11).

There’s been a nice mix of easy, tough, and boss battles. They throw an easy fight in at the right times to let you catch your breath.  So far only one escort mission and in a bit of mockery it starts out with YOU being escorted. I have not tried the multiplayer but plan to this weekend.

I cannot imagine attempting this with the Move controller and being successful so the plans are to play with the usual tiny PS3 controller.

Pros:

  • 3D + Move = immersive experience.
  • Bundle price is hard to pass up.
  • The game is overall good.

Cons:

  • Sony with its mandatory installation issues on a new games.
  • Learning curve using Move in a FPS
  • Close quarters combat can be difficult when enemies are behind you.

Recommendation:

If you have a 3D TV, this is a nice showcase to add to your collection. If you’ve been on the fence about jumping into the Move system, this price can’t be beat.

Rental or purchase and trade-in if you have no interest in 3D or Move.
